THIS IS NOT AN ON-LINE PROGRAM!

THESE ARE SOME ACTIVITIES THAT ARE USUALLY ASSIGNED AS QUICK HOMEWORK, AND WE OFTEN DO THEM IN CLASS AS A WARM-UP OR COOL-DOWN.

CURRENTLY, THERE ARE OVER 1000 SETS FOR ALL LEVELS AND ALL TOPICS, AND I MAKE A FEW MORE EVERY WEEK.

USING 90% TO 100% TARGET LANGUAGE TO TALK THROUGH AND EXPLAIN THE ACTIVITIES IS EASY, WHETHER MODELING THE FIRST TIME OR AS A WHOLE-CLASS WARM-UP/COOL-DOWN.

IF STUDENTS WORK TOGETHER, THEY CAN USE THE TARGET LANGUAGE, TOO, EVEN WITH SIMPLE EXPRESSIONS "¡UF!", "NO SÉ", "YO TAMPOCO", "YO TAMBIÉN", "BIEN HECHO", "¡FENOMENAL!", "¿EN SERIO?", "¡QUÉ LÁSTIMA!", ETC., ETC., ETC.

USE YOUR CREATIVITY TO MAKE IT INTERESTING AND IN THE TARGET LANGUAGE.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS SAYING THE SPANISH WORDS.

FONDAMENTOS PREVIEW

As a teacher, you can complete this preview in one sitting, but keep in mind that this 3-step pronunciation module is designed to be spread out over about 2 weeks. The most aggressive implementation would be over 4 days.

Even as a teacher previewing the scope and sequence of the module, I actually recommend that you split it up over 3 days and let the ideas from each step marinate during the 24-hour break.

Students certainly can watch the videos as self-study or as a class, but they are primarily for teacher training: once you understand the technique, you can explain the concepts how you see fit, and with all the target language you can squeeze in.

We do a demonstration practice set together. Before students work together in groups of 2, I provide them a series of key expressions and vocabulary to work through the practice in the target language, such as where?, here, there, right before, consonant, vowel, how many?, which?, and a lot more.

STEP 1-A: HOW MANY SYLLABLES?

· Open the practice activity by clicking on the thumbnail, but make sure you've watched the video first all the way through first: the explanation is not the traditional one you've heard before.

· In Step 1, there are over 15 sets of fun, challenging names and cognate vocabulary, including animals (rinoceronte, tortuga), musical instruments (piano, oboe), world countries (Suecia, Israel), and world cities (Tokio, Lisboa, Reikiavik, Estambul).

· Any set can be spun into an engaging proficiency-focused activity. Saying the words is not enough: the possibilities of really using the vocabulary are endless.

STEP 1-B: HOW MANY SYLLABLES?

WATCH IT - VIDEO LESSON & INSTRUCTIONS (PART B)

· This video refers to two versions of the same practice set, which aren't included on this "teacher preview" page. However, feel free to do the above practice set again ("Some First Names"), and this time through, think about finding the stressed vowel.

STEP 2: FINDING THE LOUDEST SYLLABLE

CLICK ON (OR RIGHT UNDER) THE WORD UNTIL YOU FIND THE ONE THAT FITS THE SITUATION. WHEN YOU SEE A QUESTION MARK AGAIN, YOU'VE GONE THROUGH ALL THE CHOICES AND ARE STARTING TO CYCLE THROUGH THEM AGAIN.

IF THERE ARE FOUR SITUATIONS, YOU HAVE TO SELECT AN ANSWER FOR ALL OF THEM BEFORE YOU CAN CLICK CHECK. IF THERE IS A PROBLEM, IT WON'T TELL YOU WHERE IT IS, SO MAKE YOUR FIRST SELECTIONS CAREFULLY.

PERSPECTIVE IS DETERMINED BY WHO IS TALKING, WITH WHOM, AND ABOUT WHOM. PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE TAIL OF THE BUBBLE (WHO IS TALKING?), THE HAND (ABOUT WHOM?), AND THE HEAD/EYES (WITH WHOM?).
